Meet Jimmy Ouni

We are excited to introduce yet another Founder-in-Residence at Rootical. Meet Jimmy Ouni, a passionate entrepreneur who is on a mission to transform Uganda’s food system. Delve into his entrepreneurial story and discover why he embarked on this journey of purpose-driven entrepreneurship.

Introduction

Jimmy Ouni is an ambitious entrepreneur hailing from Northern Uganda on the course to transform the Ugandan food system. His upbringing is rooted in farming and construction. Jimmy spent his early years as an apprentice, working alongside his father on construction sites during holidays and vacations. Jimmy’s hands-on experience in both farming and construction laid the foundation for his passion for agriculture and entrepreneurship.

In pursuit of academic growth, Jimmy trained as a Systems Engineer completing a Degree in Computer Engineering. He also earned a Bachelor's Degree in Commerce with a focus on Management Information Systems.

“My professional journey took a diverse turn when I worked as a sales executive at a poultry farm, which introduced me to an experience that ignited my passion for agriculture,” says Jimmy.

The Motivation Behind starting his own business

Jimmy's love for food and belief in its medicinal value motivated him to start his own business. He strives to shake up the food system in Uganda to ensure that the food we eat maintains its nutrient density from when it's planted to when it is served.

"If you don't eat food as your medicine, you will spend the rest of your life eating medicine as your food." Jimmy affirms.

Jimmy, alongside his co-founders; Hannington Wako and Akite Irine are building AgroBulking, an agri-food business that offers crop advance payments to smallholder farmers and links these farmers to off-takers directly.

The journey with Rootical

Jimmy's founding journey with Rootical was driven by his observations of the flawed food system. He noted the inefficiencies and synthetic practices that threatened Uganda’s food system.

Rootical shared his vision of transforming the food system, emphasizing regenerative practices. For instance, the excessive use of synthetic steroids and pesticides in bean farming not only damages the soil but also affects storage and cooking quality. Through collaborating with Rootical, Jimmy aims to support thousands of smallholder farmers' transition to a more regenerative food system.

“Recently, it is difficult in Uganda to store beans for over two years without encountering weevils. Additionally, cooking beans now takes longer due to the synthetic chemicals used in their cultivation and storage. To ensure our survival, the food system requires an immediate intervention,” Jimmy adds.

Defining Success

Success for Jimmy and his business is the synchronization of production and sustainability. He envisions a future where quality food is readily available, aiming to contribute towards eradicating global malnutrition and hunger from 60 billion people to zero.

“My goal is impacting 5 million farmers in Uganda, creating 5 million jobs, and ensuring that 10 million people across Sub-Saharan Africa have access to healthy food,” asserts Jimmy.

Impact on Ugandan Communities and the Environment

Jimmy's business aims to eradicate unemployment in Uganda and redefine agriculture as a viable business. He hopes to reduce malnutrition by at least 5% annually, ensuring that even future generations benefit from healthy soils.

“By focusing on the entire value chain, from production to marketing, I believe that agriculture can be a powerful tool in reducing poverty and creating viable livelihoods,” Jimmy adds.

Overcoming Challenges

Building the right team and securing funds have been significant hurdles. His first business attempt failed due to a misalignment with market needs. Additionally, infrastructural issues and dealing with unreliable individuals have posed challenges.

“Through adopting innovative storytelling and marketing strategies, I have overcome many of these obstacles. Flexibility and responsiveness to customer preferences while staying true to the business vision are some of the key traits of a successful entrepreneur,” Jimmy reflects.

Looking ahead

Jimmy hopes his business will leave a legacy that demonstrates the importance of food in promoting long life and health. He wants people to understand that food can be their medicine, and that a regenerative approach to agriculture can heal the land.

In conclusion, Jimmy's journey from a construction apprentice to a visionary agribusiness entrepreneur highlights the power of passion, resilience, and continuous learning. His work with Agrobulking, in partnership with Rootical and his commitment to transforming the food system promise a healthier, more regenerative future for Uganda and beyond.
